RainMachine Mini-8 user manual



IMPORTANT: Available touch action to navigate and make changes on the RainMachine application are: one finger tap. When the screen enters into sleep mode, one finger tap will open it back up.

On the RainMachine Mini-8 glass capacitive touch screen there are 3 back-lit illuminated touch buttons (UP, DOWN and WATERCAN), one LCD digit display, one backlit Wi-Fi logo annunciator

Below there is an animation showing how the RainMachine Mini-8 device interface works:

Local User Interface

- Wi-Fi backlit logo annunciator blinks intermittent when the system is in the process to connect to the Wi-Fi AP, or there is something wrong with the Wi-Fi connection.
When the Wi-Fi backlit logo annunciator is always ON the system is successfully connected to the Wi-Fi AP.
- Tap anywhere on the screen and the LED digit display and circle touch button will light up.
- Tap once on UP or DOWN backlit buttons to cycle through the 8 watering zones.

- Tap once on the WATERCAN backlit button to start watering the zone listed on the LED digit display. The button will start flashing. Tap once again to stop the watering for that zone.


Fastening unit

- Place the quick install guide template on the wall
- Mark and drill through the holes labeled "DRILL HERE"
- Using provided screws fasten the unit to the wall


- Insert your valve wires (wire size AWG 18-22) by pressing the orange terminals push buttons.
- You can use any or both of the C terminals as common.

Power up

- Connect the 24VAC power leads to the terminals marked 24 VAC
- Plug transformer into AC wall socket.
- System will boot for the first time and will enter in the initial setup mode and the LCD digit display will show letter A


- Join the RainMachine Wi-Fi network from your smartphone.
Note: Open system settings on the smartphone device. Go to Wi-Fi settings and search for nearby Wi-Fi networks. In the result list the RainMachine Wi-Fi network should be listed. Tap on it to connect (the Wi-Fi backlit logo on the RainMachine Mini-8 device will blink until the connection is made, after that will stay ON). - Launch RainMachine smartphone application (Android / iPhone) and continue the setup process.

- The mobile application will open first screen called Devices.

- In this example: Rainmachine-a38f6q is the name of the RainMachine Mini-8 local discovered device that needs to be setup.


- Tap on Rainmachine-a38f6q.

Note: From this moment all settings are made for the RainMachine Mini-8 device itself.

- Connect the RainMachine Mini-8 to your Wi-Fi network. A list with available Wi-Fi networks will be displayed. Choose your Wi-Fi network from that list, enter its password (if there's any) and tap connect. Now the RainMachine Mini-8 will be connected to your local Wi-Fi network as your mobile smart phone.

- Set remote access for this particular device.

Note: This is an optional step at this point and can be skipped.

- Set RainMachine Mini-8 physical location by entering the address at the street level for precise weather data accuracy.

Note: The physical location of the RainMachine Mini-8 device could be different from the location of the smart phone used in this set up process. You can skip this step, but it's not recommended.

- Set date and time.

- Set the new name for the RainMachine Mini-8 device.

- The first time setup process is complete and now the RainMachine Mini-8 with its new name (in our example: Home) is ready to save water!


● This section will show you how to connect your RainMachine to your Apple/Android smartphone/tablets and how the application works.

Note: The following steps are the same on each mobile platform.

Installing mobile app

Step 1: On your device open the  App Store/Google Play app. Search for the “rainmachine” word.
You should find the "RainMachine" mobile application.

Step 2: Download and Install the application.

Connecting to the RainMachine

● Open the newly installed RainMachine app (in our example showing the iOS 8 RainMachine application, version 4.0 and up).

● The application will open in Devices screen and automatically will start searching for local devices. To refresh the list tap the refresh upper left arrow button.

Device setup

Follow the mobile application first time setup steps for RainMachine Mini-8

Note: Skip this steps if they are already done

Discovered devices

● A list with local network RainMachine devices will be displayed.

● In this example: Home is the name of the first RainMachine local device, the other 3 devices have been set to be remotely accessible.


Add a new device

This is an advanced feature and it is not required for remote access. In cases where you want to access your device using a fixed IP address, please enter the IP and port number as described below.

Note: Older RainMachine devices (2013 models) were required to use this feature when trying to access when away from home. Newer devices (2015 models) are using a automatic cloud proxy, no special actions (direct access or power forwarding modifications) are required.

● Go to Devices screen. Tap the top left hamburger menu icon, then tap on Network Settings, then on Direct Access

● Choose a name for the RainMachine device.

● Enter the RainMachine url address.

● After connecting a RainMachine device to your mobile, the login screen will be displayed. Enter the RainMachine device password and click on Login.
Default password is admin. Check the Remember me checkbox if you want your login password credentials to be remembered by the mobile application.


How the application works

● Upon successfully login the application will open the Dashboard screen.

Note: The new Dashboard screen will be visible on the new 2015 generation of RainMachine devices, including Mini-8, Touch HD-12 and Touch HD-16.
It's not available for RainMachine 1st generation (2013) device.

● On this screen RainMachine collected data is listed as "living graphs" such as Daily Water Need, Rain Amount, Temperature and Programs. All graphs are interactive, you can swipe them left & right, change their time span using the top tabs menu (Week / Month / Year) and tap on them to open their detailed screen.

Note: The main graph called Daily Water Need it's sticky on the first place and cannot be removed. The other graphs can be removed from this screen by tapping on them and deselect the option Show on dashboard

● On each graph Today day is highlighted. From Today on to the right side of the graph, there are represented 5 future days with the Forecast amount. Swiping to the left (all graphs displayed on the Dashboard screen will swipe on the same time) it will show the past days (months or year, depending on the selected time span from the top tabs menu)

● Tap on each graph the detail screen will open with more options, such as Show on the dashboard (if disabled, selected graph will be removed from Dashboard screen) and Show all data option that list detailed info by day for selected graph.

● The user can manage maximum 8 zones that the device can be programmed to water and all active zones can be seen in Zones section.
By default, the watering time is set to 5 minutes. This can be changed by tapping a zone and then change the amount of time using + and - circle buttons.

● The Zone 1 can be set as Master Valve.

● Only one zone can water at one time. If more zones were scheduled for watering they will receive the status “Pending” until the first one finishes.

● The watering will start in the order the zones were scheduled.


Zones - Manual watering

● In Zones section you can manage the zones you want to be watered at one time. In this section, the list with all available zones is displayed.

● To begin the watering, choose a zone, set the number of minutes the sprinkler will water using + and - circle buttons and then click on Start or if there is no need to change the amount of watering time, just tap the ON (start/pending watering) / OFF (stop watering) switch in front of the zone name and the action is instant.


● If you want all the remaining zones to be watered, you can put them in pending by tapping the switches. To stop the watering select the zone and click on Stop, or tap the ON/OFF switch. To stop all watering tap the upper left side Stop All text button.

Edit Zones

● You can edit a zone by selecting Edit button from the top right corner of the Zones screen.
For each zone you can change the name, active state, vegetation, turn ON/OFF forecast data and historical averages options.

● When finished, tap the Save text button to save the changes made.



● The application allows you to organize your zones into programs or to delay watering activities. Go to Settings section and tap on Programs to create, start, edit or discard programs.

● To add a new program:

→ Go to Settings -> Programs and click on Add New Program +
→ To set the same number of minutes for all zones to be watered or select a different value for each zone.
→ To delay the watering of the zones inside a program with “n” minutes choose Delay between zones option.
→ From Cycle & Soak option you can set the number of minutes for water cycles and soak. This option divides each zone into a number of parts equal to water cycles and delays every part with the number of minutes equal to soak.
→ Rename the program and tap on Save red text button. The newly created program will now be displayed in Programs list. Also, to discard all changes, tap on Discard text button.
→ Tapping Start text button will automatically start the program you created.


● To delete a program go to Settings -> Programs. Tap on Edit upper right text button and choose what program to delete, tap on the red circle and then the Delete delete button and the program will be erased from Programs list.

● You can edit a program by simply taping it in Programs list. Modify the options and tap on Save red text button.

● Programs can also be activated or deactivated from Programs list. Tap on a program and choose Active ON/OFF switch option.

Watering History

Go to Settings section and tap on Watering History to view the last 7 days watering log.

Using the upper right Export text button the watering log can be sent by email in csv format.


● The application allows you to snooze all your watering activities. From Settings -> Snooze section, select the number of days and tap on Snooze button.



Watering restriction can be set from this settings screen.
Go to Settings - Restrictions
● Hot Days / Allow extra watering - the system can be forced to allow extra watering during the hot days.
● Freeze Protect / Do not water under 32F - select the lowest outside temperature level that once being reached the irrigation system will not start watering activities.
● Months - select the months that the irrigation system will not start watering activities.
● Days - select weekdays that the irrigation system will not start watering activities.
● Hours - select starting hour, the amount of time and the weekdays that the irrigation system will not start watering activities.


Note: The manual operation of the device (start and stop program or zone watering) is not being affected by the watering restrictions set in this mobile application screen.


The Weather settings mobile application screen provides 3 options:

Select the source of the weather data.

Set the rain sensitivity amount and select the number of days the irrigation soil type can store in the summer days.

Note: Changes applied on the Weather screen options will affect the forecast data values displayed on the new DASHBOARD graphs and may take some time to recalculate.

System Settings

On the System Settings mobile application screen there are option like:

Remote Access

Remote access from anywhere in the world the RainMachine device by entering a valid email address and choose a password.

A verification email message will be automatically sent to that address and await for confirmation. After successfully confirmed the email address, this RainMachine device can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Using mobile application open the Devices screen - tap the top left "hamburger" menu icon - choose Account Settings - enter the remote access login credentials (email address and password) - tap Save button. Going back to the Devices screen the RainMachine device will be listed (with it's name, in this example: Danielle's Dallas Home) and can be accessed remotely.

Note: Using the same remote access credentials (email and password) on multiple RainMachine devices is allowed, but email validation has to be completed for each device.
For example owning RainMachine Mini-8 and a RainMachine Touch HD-12, the first one at home and the second one on a different location, using the same email address and password for remote access will list them both in the Devices mobile application screen. If different remote access credentials will be used for different RainMachine devices then on the Account Settings mobile application screen the remote access accounts need to be added in order for that RainMachine devices to be listed and then easily accessed.

● Device Name - change the name of the device.
● Location - set or change the location of the device Note: Enter RainMachine device location at street level for more accurate weather data.
● Date, Time, Time Format, Timezone and Units - this device system settings will automatically adjust based on the location data provided.
Note: This settings can be manually set/changed If that doesn't happen.
● Password - this device system setting allow to set a local password for accessing the device.
Note: This password is stored locally on the device itself.

Appendix 1

Evapotranspiration (ET)

Evapotranspiration accounts for the amount of water lost to the atmosphere as a result of evaporation (both from soil and plant leaves) and transpiration from the plant issues. Using ET, the RainMachine estimates how much water your lawn, garden and trees need to grow healthy. To learn more about evapotranspiration, please consult: Evapotranspiration

RainMachine downloads weather forecast data from NOAA* and using a complex algorithm, it calculates ET and estimates the water needs for the next days. NOAA provides forecast data for the entire US with a 5 km (approx. 3 miles) spatial resolution, allowing RainMachine to predict the watering adjustments.

Note: Unlike other smart sprinkler controllers, RainMachine uses free weather data from NOAA’s National Weather Service, a governmental agency paid from your tax dollars. You will never pay fees for accessing weather data.

Quantitative Precipitation Forecast (QPF)

After estimating the water loss, RainMachine takes into account the estimated QPF amount of rain, with spatial resolution of 5 km.

QPF is the expected amount of melted precipitation accumulated over a specified time period over a certain area.

Note: QPF becomes better as we approach the event (e.g.: the rainfall). Better results on saving water can be obtained if your program frequency is less than 3 days.

Crop Coefficient - Kc

Each zone has its own water requirements. Depending on vegetation type, RainMachine adjust the ET values using a crop coefficient abbreviated “Kc”. Navigate to Settings/Zones to set the vegetation type for each zone. That will improve both the health of your plants,and the amount of water saved.

The RainMachine Algorithm

The user is required to set the Base Watering Duration for each zone as required in a normal summer day, and RainMachine takes it from there, adjusting watering time based on estimated ET, QPF and Kc.

The RainMachine has an internal database with average ET on your area (ETavg), and compares that with current ET, deriving a percent of water need (WN).

WN = (Kc x ET – QPF) / (Kc x ETavg)

For instance, if you programmed to water for 5 minutes during the summer, and if the above formula returns WN=80%, RainMachine is going to water only 4 minutes (80% from 5 minutes).

If QPF becomes bigger than ET (e.g. lots of rain), the RainMachine will not start watering at all.  (WN is zero or less).

If WN becomes negative, that means we have a surplus of water, and the RainMachine stores that surplus in a non-volatile memory, delaying watering cycles for up to 3 days of ETavg. That accounts for even more water savings.

Note: The adjusting algorithm (Internet Weather check box) can be disabled per individual zone, allowing you to have different watering behavior on different zones . Do not set Internet Weather = Yes for greenhouses, covered patios, flower pots.
